Park Town: number changes

Until 1940 the address Park Town was given just to the houses that stood at the entrance to the whole development that bears that name today.

The part that came next was the 22 houses of Park Crescent, running eastwards along the south side from 1–11 and then westwards along the north side from 12–22.

Then came the eight semi-detached Clarendon Villas, whose numbering seems inconsistent.

At the back of the development was the 15 houses of Park Terrace, with the numbers running consecutively from 1 to 15 from north to south.

In about 1940 the whole estate was renumbered as follows:

• 1 to 61 Park Town (odd numbers running east on the north side)
• 2 to 64 Park Town (even numbers running east on the south side).

The table below shows the addresses given in the Kelly's Directory on each side of this renumbering, with the name of the occupier if there is a match. Original house names have been added where possible.

The Park Town Estate Company went into liquidation in 1861, and the following notice published in Jackson’s Oxford Journal on 9 November 1861 advertised an auction of the properties in Park Town that still belonged to that company:

• Lot 1: Richmond Lodge (unidentified), a detached villa fronting the Banbury Road: sold for £1,000 to the Revd Mr Christopher, the current occupant
• Lot 2: The Cedars (now 2 Park Town), a detached villa: occupied by Colonel Wakefield and sold for £1,250 to Levi Greatbatch, a glass & china dealer of 15 High Street
• Lot 3: Crescent Lodge (now 4 Park Town), occupied by the Misses Hooper: not sold, as the highest bid of £1,520 did not meet the reserve. It was advertised again on 9 September 1865, with a fuller description of the house.
• Lot 4: Thornbury Lodge (unidentified), a detached villa fronting the Banbury Road occupied by William Thompson: not sold at the auction, as the highest bid of £990 did not meet the reserve; sold by private contract
• Lot 5: Beech Lawn (now Beech Lawn at 1 Park Town), a detached family residence occupied by Captain Jones: not sold, as the highest bid of £1,400 did not meet the reserve of £1,600
• Lot 6: Carlton Lodge (now 5 Park Town) a detached villa residence occupied by Mr S. L. Seckham (who had designed Park Town in 1853): not sold at the auction, as the highest bid of £850 did not meet the reserve of £990; sold by private contract
• Lot 7: A piece of eligible building land between Lots 5 & 6: bought in at the reserve price of £250
• Lots 8 to 15 inclusive: Eight semi-detached villa residences, of which only one sold, namely Lot 13 (6 Clarendon Villas, now No. 33 Park Town), in the occupation of Mrs Bandinel, widow of Bulkeley Bandinel, for £800
• Lots 16 & 17: Stabling and coach houses (the North and South Mews, probably the site of the present 46 & 48 Park Town): withdrawn as no offer was made

Above: Photograph of Crescent Lodge School, whose address was originally 9 Park Town. The address of this house has been 4 Park Town since the renumbering of 1941. Crescent Lodge School (an “establishment for young ladies”) was run by the Misses Hooper who advertised it regularly in Jackson's Oxford Journal between 1870 and 1875, and thereafter with the name Crescent Lodge College.
